Pacific Madrone Arbutus menziesii

Comments: Broadleafed evergreen native to California and the Pacific Coastal Ranges. Leaves are approx. 2" long and dark green; bark is red and peels away exposing a smooth green undercoat which turns red with age. Height is usually under 10' but tree can grow to 50'. Red fleshy fruit in Summer. Not really a "roadside" tree, but the tree is easily accessable by foot and the path is paved.
